This is a textured crochet stitch that uses half doubl crochet stitches and slip stitches to make a thick fabric that is perfect for making objects that require some sturdiness such as  washcloths, wrist warmers, scarves, placemats and 3-dimensional objects such as bowls and cups cup holders. 

The name comes from the fact that the texture this stitch produces appears crunchy, sturdy, and dense.

As long as you know how to make the half double crochet and slip stitch, you can make the Crochet Crunch Stitch.

Notes about Crochet Crunch Stitch Pattern

  • All instructions are written in US terms
  • Reversible fabric
  • Worked on a multiple of 2 plus 1 for the foundation chain.
  • Easy two row repeat that is easy to memorize. 
  • If stitches are tight, consider using a hook one size larger than would be appropriate for the weight of yarn chosen.

Instructions for Making a Practice Swatch

Ch a multiple of 2 + 1.  For this tutorial, I created a chain of 25 for a sample swatch.  If you'd like to make a washcloth, scroll down or click here.

Row 1:  (RS):  1 sl st in third ch from hook (first two chains cound as a hdc.  *1 hdc in next ch, 1 sl st in next ch;  rep from * across, turn (24 stitches).

Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), 1 sl st in next hdc, *1 hdc in next sl st, 1 sl st in next hdc;  rep from * across, turn.

Rep row 2 for pattern until you reach your desired length.  Fasten off, weave in ends.

  • Yarn:  Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton #4 Worsted Weight Yarn
  • Hook Size:  4.5 mm

Instructions

Ch 31.  

Row 1:  (RS):  1 sl st in third ch from hook (first two chains cound as a hdc.  *1 hdc in next ch, 1 sl st in next ch;  rep from * across, turn (24 stitches).

Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), 1 sl st in next hdc, *1 hdc in next sl st, 1 sl st in next hdc;  rep from * across, turn.

Rep rows 1 and 2 for pattern until you reach your desired length.  

Border (Optional)

Switch to a contrasting color. 

Corners:  Work 2 sc, ch, 2 sc in the same corner space.

Edges: Work one sc in each stitch around the square.  Repeat using the main color or color of choice.  Fasten off, weave in ends.
