Unless you love making squares and rectangle crochet projects, you will want to learn how to create increases and decreases.  The good news is that the double crochet increase stitch is the easiest one to learn.

If you know how to make a double crochet stitch, you can make an increase stitch, because increases are created when you make two crochet stitches in the same space or stitch.

Double Crochet Increase Stitch Abbreviations and Wordings

You may see it worded differently in patterns depending on the designer.  For example,

  • Work 2dc in next stitch
  • Dc inc
  • 2 dc in same stitch

How to Make a Double Crochet Increase Stitch

To make an increase, you simply work two (or more) double crochet stitches in the same space or stitch. This increases the stitch count across the row or round.

When 2 Double Crochets in the Same Stitch is NOT an increase

You may also see instructions that tell you to make two or more double crochet into the same stitch.  This happens when we make stitches such as a shell stitch.  This is not an increase because you normally skip a stitch in between to prevent increases and keep the stitch count even.

Crochet in Rounds vs. Rows

The double crochet increase stitch is worked the same whether you are working in rows or in rounds.  Two double crochet stitches are worked in the same space or stitch.  Increasing the appropriate number stitches when working a circle is important because the circle will not lay flat.

Directions

Note: The chain 2 at the beginning of the row counts as a double crochet stitch.  If you prefer, chain 3.  I personally prefer to make two chains as I think it creates a neater edge.

Ch 4.

Row 1: 2 dc in 4th ch from hook, turn.  (3 dc)

Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as dc here and through), dc in same st, 2 dc in next st, dc in last st, turn. (5 dc)

Row 3: Ch 2, dc in same st, dc in each dc to last 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, dc in turning ch,  turn. (7 dc)

Row 4 and beyond:  Repeat row 3 until you reach your desired size. (2 increased stitches per row) Then, fasten off.
