The Best Interchangeable Knitting Needles: Review 2025
Interchangeable Circular Needles: An Unbiased Review
This is NOT a sponsored post. I purchased all of the circular needle kits and two circular needles, then tried them out before writing this article.

I purchased five sets of Interchangeable circular needles (Chiaogoo, Knit Pro, Knit Picks, Clover and Yarniss, plus two Hiyia Hiyia needles. The only reason that I did not purchase the Hiyia Hiyia was that it is the most expensive set and there was just not enough budget for it at this time. I will still review the two Hiyia Hiyia needles but please note that they are not interchangeable.
Sorry, my budget only goes so far.
If your collection of circular needles resembles this, it may be time to consider adding a set of interchangeable needles to your toolbox.
What are Circular Needles?
If you have been knitting for even a short time, you have probably encountered circular needles. These knitting needles have straight needle tips connected with a cable and are used for knitting in the round, such as when you are making sweaters, hats, and socks, or when you are knitting flat and need a long needle, such as working on a blanket or an XXL sweater.
A Quick Summary of Circular Needles
When purchasing circular needles, it is essential to know the size of the needle tip and the length of the cable. So, you might need a US 7 (4.5 mm), but you will also need to know how long the cable you want. Cables are measured from needle tip to needle tip, so you might want to buy a size US 7 with a 16-inch cord or cable.
This means that the total length of the needles is 16 inches, regardless of the actual size of the needle tips, which also vary in size. Standard cable sizes are 16″, 24″, and 32″. You can, however, find cables that are very short, perfect for socks, or longer that are needed for blankets.
Have I confused you yet?
I don’t mean to confuse you, but I added this introduction so you will see why interchangeable knitting needle sets are a good investment.
Interchangeable Circular Knitting Needles
Interchangeable circular needles consist of separate needle tips that screw into flexible cables of various lengths. They are a valuable addition to your knitting bag, but they have their limitations.
The biggest problem with them is that you may need to purchase a new set of needles for each project, which can get expensive.
Unlike fixed circular needles, where the tips and cable are permanently joined, interchangeable systems allow you to mix and match any tip size with any cable length, creating countless combinations from a single set.
Why Interchangeable Needles Are Game-Changers
When you purchase a set, you are getting an assortment of needles and cables so when combined, you are likely to have the perfect needle for the project you are working on. Here are some benefits of interchangeable needles:
Benefits of Investing in Interchangeable Needles
1. Space and Organization:
Instead of collecting dozens of individual circular needles, one interchangeable set can replace an entire collection. Most sets come with organized storage cases that keep everything tidy and portable.
2. Cost-Effective:
While the initial investment may seem steep, interchangeable sets typically cost less than buying equivalent fixed circulars separately. Plus, you only need to replace individual components if they break or wear out.
3. Project Flexibility:
Switch from knitting a hat on 16-inch cables to a sweater body on 32-inch cables using the same needle tips. Try different needle sizes mid-project without transferring stitches to new needles. You can even knit on two sizes of needles, say a US 7 and a US 8 on the same project.
Customization:
Create cable lengths that don't exist in fixed needles by joining cables together with connectors, perfect for large projects like blankets or oversized garments.
What to Look for in an Interchangeable Set
When evaluating interchangeable needle sets, there are a few characteristics that you should consider:
- Join of needles to cables: The connection should be smooth and very secure, otherwise you will be spending all of your time wrestling your stitches over the connection hump.
- Material of the Needles: This is a matter of personal preference. If you usually like to knit with wood or bamboo, a sharp metal needle may not be ideal for you. If all you enjoy doing is lacework, then a very sharp smooth metal needle is a must.
- Size Range of Needles: Check the needle sizes in the set. You might find an affordable set with needles 0 to 3, which is perfect for those who love to knit socks. If that is not you, then you will be wasting your money.
- Cable Flexibility: Today, most cables are relatively flexible, but some are more flexible than others. Flexible cords make knitting easier, and for some types of knitting, such as the Magic Loop, flexibility is essential.
- Storage Solutions: When I first started knitting seriously, I didn’t think much about storage, but as I continued to knit and collect “stuff,” I found that a good method of storage is important. I tried everything, including a thick 3-ring loose-leaf binder, but that didn't even work well once I filled it up with a circular needles that I rarely used. It got so bad that I spent more time looking for the right needle than actually knitting.
If you are ready to purchase your first set of interchangeable needles or maybe looking for something different, let's dive in.
Interchangeable Knitting Needle Reviews
Before we begin, let me just say that there are some circular needles that I absolutely love and use over and over again. But an interchangeable needle set requires a relatively costly investment, so as I am writing this review, I have a few more sets resting in my wish list for later when I feel the time is right.
For the reviews that follow, I decided to test each set of interchangeable needles by making hats/beanies,caps, etc. to see how they hold up to actual projects.
In case you'd like to know which needles I love the most, keep reading and I'll let you in on my secret.
1. Knit Picks Options Caspian Wood Interchangeable Knitting Needle Set - US 4-11
Knit Picks Options Caspian Wood Interchangeable Knitting Needle Set
Knit Picks Options Caspian Wood Interchangeable Knitting Needle Set
I am using this interchangeable needle to make a beginner-level shawl that is worked flat. Remember, you don't need to limit your use of circular needles when working in the round. They are perfect for working flat too.
The KnitPicks Caspian Wood Set offers a mid-range interchangeable needle option with distinctive green coloring. Priced at around $77 on Amazon, this set targets knitters who love wood needles with a complete starter package for medium-weight yarn projects. The set I have include needle sizes US 4 to 11 (3.5 mm to 8.0 mm).
This is only one of many different options for circular and straight needles that Knit Picks offers.
Material & Construction
Needle Tips:
- These are made from wood with an attractive green marbled finish.
- The tips measure 4.75 inches in length, providing a comfortable grip for most hand sizes.
- The green coloring is lovely, but all of the needles in the set look identical making it difficult to tell the difference without a needle size guide. None are marked with the size.
- Stitches glide smoothly on the needles, but not so smoothly that those stitches slide off the needles. This is especially important for beginners.
Cables:
- Green cables that coordinate with the needle tips. The matching color scheme creates a professional look that stands out from typical clear or purple cords found in other sets. In my opinion, it is both a benefit and a con. Until you can look at a cable and know immediately how long it is, you might need to pull out that measuring tape.
- Cable Lengths includes four cables in total: Two 24-inch cables (ideal for large hats, sleeves, and smaller circumference projects and two 32-inch cables (perfect for sweater bodies and larger projects. I prefer having two cable lengths because I can work on more than one project at a time. The kit also includes a connector for use when connecting two cables for an extra-long circumference such as if you are making a blanket
Join Quality:
- This set provides a decent join, smooth and relatively secure. The yarn does not snag, but I've found that you may need to keep the join key handy to tighten periodically.
Size Range:
- US sizes 4-11, covering the most commonly used needle sizes for worsted weight, Dk and bulky weight yarns. This range works well for sweaters, hats, scarves, and most everyday knitting projects, although it excludes smaller sizes required for sock knitting and larger sizes suitable for more bulky projects.
Storage and Accessories:
- It Comes with a clear vinyl case for organization. This is a negative for me, because I’ve found that the plastic tears over time, including the flaps that keep supplies secure.
- The set includes 8 end caps for holding stitches if needed, 1 cable connector, 2 tighteners for securing connectors including the green cables.
Price and Value
- Initial Investment: At $77.47, this set falls into the mid-range category - more expensive than basic starter sets but less than premium options. In my opinion, for those who like the feel of warm wood, this is a great value.
- With 8 needle sizes and multiple cables, you're getting good value, especially considering the included accessories.
Who Should Consider This Set?
This set is ideal for knitters who are:
- Getting started and want to invest in a decent set of interchangeable needles
- Knitters who primarily work with DK to worsted-weight yarns
- Knitters who enjoy making sweaters, cardigans, hats, cowls, and like the idea of working flat projects with circular needles
- Knitters who prefer wood needles over metal
- Knitters who like coordinated colorful tools.
What are the Limitations?
- This set may not be ideal for knitters who need a full spectrum of needle sizes.
- There is a decent size range for most projects, but does not include needles for knitting lace, socks or very chunky projects.

2. ChiaoGoo Twist Red Lace 4-Inch Small 7400-S Interchangeable Circular Knitting Needle Set, Sizes US 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
ChiaoGoo is known for producing high-quality knitting needles, and the stainless steel construction of these needles ensures durability and smooth knits.
It is often the needles that serious knitters gravitate to when considering a new set of interchangeable knitting needles.
The set that I am reviewing includes knitting needle sizes US 2 to US 8, offering a good range for a variety of projects. There is a more expensive option that includes additional sizes. (It's on my wish list, but not yet in the budget.
ChiaoGoo Twist Red Lace 4-Inch Small
ChiaoGoo Twist Red Lace 4-Inch Small
Materials and Construction
Needles:
- ChiaoGoo stainless steel needles are durable and provide a smooth knitting experience
- Versatile Size Range: US 2-8 covers most common project needs from fine to medium weight yarns, but this is also a drawback, as the size range may not be ideal for those who enjoy knitting a wide range of projects.
- The needle tips measure less than 4 inches which is a little small for my taste, but still very useable.
- The needle tips are very sharp and smooth, making them the perfect needle for lace work and for those working with working with fingering weight, sportsweight, and sock yarns.
Cables:
- The inclusion of four cables (two 8-inch, one 14-inch, and one 22-inch) provides versatility for different project sizes. ChiaoGoo cables are known for being flexible with minimal memory, meaning they won't twist or kink during knitting.
- Cable Connector and End Stoppers: The set comes with a cable connector, which allows you to combine cables for larger projects if needed. The end stoppers help secure your work if you need to remove the needles.
Accessories:
- The set also includes useful accessories such as two cord keys for tightening the connections, ensuring the needles don't come apart while knitting.
- The needle gauge is handy for identifying needle sizes, and 12 stitch markers (in two styles) are essential tools for keeping track of your projects, a nice addition, but definitely not a game changer.
Carry Case:
- The iconic and convenient cloth carry case helps keep everything organized and portable, a great advantage for knitters on the go.
- I like the size because it doesn’t take up much space when stored at home and the design is so well-known that anyone who has been knitting awhile will immediately recognize the black and white design.
Price and Value
- Price: At $106.84, the set is priced on the higher side, but considering the quality and the range of tools included, it's a reasonable investment for serious knitters.
Drawbacks and Limitations
- Metal Needles: Some knitters prefer wood or bamboo needles for warmth and a better grip.
- Cable Quantity: Only 4 cables total - you might want more variety in lengths for different projects
- Expensive up front cost if you're unsure about your long-term knitting commitment.
- Smaller Needle Tips

3. Yarniss 13 Pairs of Circular Knitting Needles Set 3.0mm~10.0mm, Round Knitting Needle with Interchangeable Cable
Yarniss 13 Pairs of Circular Knitting Needles Set
Yarniss 13 Pairs of Circular Knitting Needles Set
This is a decent, budget-friendly set that is perfect for beginners or those just starting with interchangeable needles. The set includes 13 pairs of circular needles, ranging in size from 3 mm to 10 mm, and at $39.89, it offers good value.
At approximately $3.07 per pair, this represents excellent value, mainly since the set covers the most commonly used needle sizes. This set is especially designed for:
- Budget minded knitters,
- Knitters who want to test out interchangeable needles
- Absolute beginners who don't want to spend an arm and a leg on a hobby they are just considering.
Materials and Constructions
Needles
- This set includes13 pairs of 4 inch (10cm) aluminum circular knitting needles with sizes ranging from 3.0mm to 10mm
- The needle tips are made of lightweight aluminum, rust-free and durable
- The join between the needle and cable is satisfactory but if you knit tightly, you may find that moving stitches over the join may require more effort than you might expect.
- Needles are marked with their sizes and each size comes in a different color making it easy to identify.
- Beginners may find aluminum easier to use than steel because it is a bit sticker, meaning that the stitches won't slip off the needle tips as easily.
Cables
- The set comes with 4 cables of different lengths (12.6 inches, 15 inches, 16.7 inches, 21.6 inches), 2 couplers, and 2 cable keys. There are also four end tips if you need to remove the needles.
- Keep the cable keys handy as you may need to tighten them periodically
- Cables are relatively flexible, but not as flexible as some more expensive sets.
Accessories
- A large assortment of accessories are included in the set including cable keys, extendors, positioning tool and buttons. There is also an assortment of crochet hooks it needed to fix mistakes. This last item is a nice addition to any knitter's tool box because you never know when you will need a hook to fix a dropped stitch.
Carrying Case
- For an inexpensive set of needles, the case far exceeds expectations. The thick purple leather case includes room to keep the cables and accessories safely tucked away. The outside of the case is pink/purple, lightweight and attractive.
Price and Value
The price is perfect and the value is good, especially for knitters who like aluminum needle tips. With the added bonus of cables and accessories, this set has a lot to offer for the price.
Each needle tip is painted in a different color making it easy to identify. Needle sizes are easily printed on the barrel of the needle tip, so there is no need to invest in an additional tool for identifing sizes. The case is large enough to hold the thirteen needles yet compact enough to fit into a knitting bag that can be used on the go for any knitting project.
Overall, this is a great value for anyone just getting started.
Drawbacks and Limitations
Aluminum needles and thin but less than flexible cables may not appeal to all knitters. For those just getting started, this is a perfect set.
For a small investment, new knitters can get a large number of needle sizes that will keep them knitting for years to come, both in the round and flat.
However, for those that prefer a different type of needle such as ones made with bamboo, wood, or steel, this set may be less than ideal. Although not specific to this set, the cables are often too large for the projects I want to make such as mittens and socks. I also had to stop and retighten the connections part way through the project I was working on.

4. Takumi Clover Interchangeable Circular Knitting Needles
Takumi Clover Interchangeable Circular Knitting Needles
The Takumi Clover Interchangeable Set delivers a quality selection for those who appreciate bamboo needles and smooth knitting experiences. Priced at approximately $120, this set appeals to knitters who cherish natural materials and precision craftsmanship.
Material & Construction
Needle Tips:
- Crafted from high-quality bamboo, the tips provide a warm and lightweight feel.
- The needle tips are well-polished, ensuring a smooth glide for stitches without excessive slipperiness, making them a great choice for beginners and experienced knitters alike.
- Measuring shy of 4 inches in length, they cater to a wide range of hand sizes and knitting styles, however, they are just a bit short for my hands.
Cables:
- This set includes cables that are flexible and transparant, a characteristic not seen in other sets.
- It features a secure locking mechanism to prevent unscrewing during use, offering an excellent join that minimizes snagging. The design ensures smooth transitions between the needle and cable, although periodic tightening may be necessary for optimal performance.
- Tightening the cable to the needles is done manually and does not require a key which is common in most other sets. Still I noticed that the joins stay tight dispite the lack of a key.
- The set included multiple cables of varying lengths, ranging from 16 inches to 40 inches. These options accommodate different project requirements, from hats to expansive blankets.
- The set does not include cable connectors, which may be a limitation for those needing extra-long configurations.
Size Range
- The set covers a range of US sizes 3-15, providing a comprehensive selection for various projects, from lightweight lace to bulky knits. This broad range is ideal for knitters tackling diverse projects like socks, shawls, afghans, and more.
Storage
- The set arrives in a very nice fabric case for organized storage. This durable, stylish option offers better longevity than plastic alternatives, enhancing the overall value of the needle set.
- There is a separate pocket for holding all the cables.
Price and Value
- Initial Investment: At roughly $120, this set is positioned in the higher mid-range market. While more costly than some entry-level sets, its quality components provide considerable value because it does include 12 different sized needles.
- With a generous selection of needle sizes and durable bamboo construction, this set delivers substantial value for those prioritizing natural materials and comprehensive size options.
Who Should Consider this Set?
- Knitters preferring bamboo needles and natural materials
- Projects across various weights, from lace to bulky
- Those seeking a reliable and smooth knitting experience
Drawbacks
Overall, I like this set. The needletips were not as sticky as I had first thought, yet I had no problems with stitches slipping off the tips. I did have to stop and retighten the connections which is not fun, especially when some of your stitches slip off.

- The set comes with a sleek and modern case, durable enough to protect components over time. The stylish look enhances both functionality and convenience for efficient organization.
- In my opinion, the case far exceeded expectations for style and functionality. There was a separate zippered pouch on the outside to hold all the accessories and a magnetic area inside to hold patterns in place. I did not see this feature in any of the other sets that I reviewed in this post.

My Favorites
I promised you that I would let you know which needles are at the top of the my favorites list. I love ChiaoGoo for most knitting projects, especially when I am making something that requires the Magic Loop Method. Their flexible cables make this type of knitting so easy.
I also love Knit Picks wooden sets for most of my projects, but for an inexpensive alternative for anyone who loves aluminum needles, the Yarniss brand can't be beat.

Frequently Asked Questions
Interchangeable knitting needles are a system of needle tips and cords that can be screwed together to create circular needles of various lengths and sizes. They allow knitters to switch needle sizes or cord lengths without changing the entire tool.
Yes, many knitters use interchangeable needles for magic loop. Look for sets with flexible cables and small-diameter tips. ChiaoGoo and HiyaHiya are often favored for this technique due to their smooth joins and memory-free cords.
Consider needle material (metal, wood, bamboo), size range, cable flexibility, join smoothness, and how securely the tips connect. Also check what extras are included—like cable keys, stoppers, or a storage case.
Not usually. Most brands have proprietary connection systems, so tips and cords from one brand often don’t work with another. Some third-party adapters exist, but compatibility isn’t guaranteed.
Interchangeable needles offer more flexibility than fixed circulars because you can swap tips and cords to match your project’s needs. However, fixed circulars may feel sturdier for high-tension knitting or very fine work.
Yes, Knitters Pride and KnitPro are the same brand marketed under different names. Knitters Pride was used primarily in North America, while KnitPro is the international label. Both lines are made by the same manufacturer and feature identical quality and design.
All interchangeable needle tips, cables, and accessories from Knitters Pride and KnitPro are fully cross-compatible. You can mix and match parts without any issues—they use the same threading system and measurements.
Last Words
As a beginner, you might be wondering why there are so many choices. We all knit differently and appreciate different knitting needles. Maybe you love the warmth of bamboo and wood, or the sharp tips that steel needles offer. Maybe you love knitting and have decided that you prefer a different type of needle for each project you choose.
I hope that you will go away with the idea that not one of these needle sets is the best for everyone. You might even decide that you want to try a type of needle but can't afford a complete set. Most companies offer a wide range of options, and it would make sense to try out a circular needle before investing in a kit. With this said, I have been actively testing out more options and will update this review when the time is right.
