You've learned how to make the knit stitch and the purl stitch and now want a quick easy pattern to put your new skills to a good purpose. Or, you already know how to knit and need a quick hostess gift that you can create in an hour or two. If so, you are in the right place. Here a complete pattern for you to try.
For this project, I added a four-row garter stitch border. I also added an optional fringe on two sides. If you need more information about the fleck stitch, I have a complete tutorial for you to check out.

BO - Bind off: How to Bind Off
RS - Right Side
* * Work the instructions between the two asterisks for the number of times indicated in the pattern.
st/sts: Stitch/stitches
This pattern works on a multiple of 2 + 1. I cast on 21 stitches (2 x 10) + 1 = 21. If you want your coasters to be larger or smaller, cast on an odd number of stitches
CO 21
Row 1 - 4: K across
Row 5: K4, p to last 4 sts. K4.
Row 6: K5, *p1, K1 repeat from * to last 4 sts. K4.
Row 7: K4, p to last 4 sts. K4.
Row 8: K across
Repeat rows 5 to 8 four more times
Last four rows - K across.
BO, Weave in Ends.
Optional: Add a one-inch fringe on either side of the coaster.
Beginning knitters often get confused with stitch and row repeats.
Stitch Counts: What starts out as a square or rectangle often gets misshaped because stitches are often inadvertently added (usually because of an accidental yarn over) or reduced due to a stitch getting dropped. To avoid either of these, get into the habit of counting your stitches at the end of the row.
Row Counts: This pattern uses a 4-row repeat meaning that it takes four rows of knitting to complete the pattern. If you are a knitter who tends to put down your knitting frequently, you might be confused about where to begin when you pick up your work later. There are several ways to help you keep your place when knitting.
I hope you have enjoyed this easy knit pattern. I've tried to make it easy to read and understand, but if you do have a question, please feel free to contact me using the contact form at the bottom of this page.
Happy Knitting,
